Chhindwara largely depends on agriculture like most of Madhya Pradesh, most of its population is engaged in agriculture thus making it an agrarian economy. Around 78% of population of Madhya Pradesh is directly engaged in agriculture. It is situated on Bodhi stream, a tributary of Kulbehra River. The region is rich in resources and efforts are being made to tap those resources. Chhindwara has abundant economic possibilities and opportunities that can be exploited. Efforts are being made to trigger economic transformation of the area.

Blessed with abundant natural resources and suitable climate, agriculture has became the main profession of the inhabitants of Chhindwara. Most of the people here are farmers. The major field crops of Chhindwara are rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, sugarcane, soyabean and pea. The town has a grain market near Railway Station that caters to the needs of the people.

Economy of Chhindwara

The horticulture produce includes fruits such as orange, guava, mango, water-chestnut, lemon, papaya. Vegetables include potato, cabbage, pumpkin, okra, onion, brinjal, green peas and tomato among others. Chhindwara exports potato to the nearby districts as well as rest of Madhya Pradesh. The spices produced in this region are chilli, ginger, garlic among others.

National Horticulture Mission

Economic growth in Chhindwara

The Ministry of Agriculture has come up with a National Horticulture Mission in order to address all the issues related to the holistic development of horticulture in the state. This programme is being implemented by State Horticulture Development Society with the support of district mission committees through farmers, Grower Associations, societies etc. This initiative has been implemented in 34 districts of Madhya Pradesh. Major activities taken up under this scheme are production & distribution of planting material, vegetable seed production, organic farming, pollination through bee keeping etc. lots of measures have been taken by the government to strengthen the agricultural scenario of the district.

Industries in Chhindwara

Chhindwara is famous for its small and medium scale industries. It is known for pottery, leather based, ornaments industries. However in the recent years there has been an upsurge in the industrial scene of the area. Various small scale industries like agro based, jute & jute based, minerals, leather based, paper products etc, thrive in the region. Numerous medium scale industries are also flourishing in and around Chhindwara. Hindustan Unilever has its presence in Chhindwara. The group is the most celebrated names in the fast moving consumer goods industry with a strong foot hold on the market.

Industries in Chhindwara

The HUL in Chhindwara is situated at Narsinghpur Road at village Lehgadua, 5 km away from the city Headquarter. The Hindustan Unilever plant of chhindwara has over 250 employees, who work in three shifts. The products that the Chhindwara unit produces are Surf excel powder, Rin soap and Wheel washing powder. HUL Chhindwara has been honoured with the ‘National Safety Award’ for remarkable performance in industrial safety.

Raymond Group in Chhindwara

The Raymond Chhindwara plant setup in 1991, is located at a village named Borgaon which is around 70 km away from Chhindwara. It has been panning out and adding value to its customers, stake holders and employees. It is spread over 100 acres of land and produces premium pure wool, wool blended and polyester viscose suiting. Raymond Chhindwara unit has attained a 95.9% capacity utilization in the year 2001-02 which is laudable and considered very high in the Textile Industry.

Spices Park in Chhindwara

An initiative by the Spice Board of India. This project is aimed at boosting spice export from India. Chhindwara Spices Park came into existence in 2009 and was built with a budget of 20cr and is spread over 18 acres. Chhindwara Spices Park, first in the series of 7 parks is situated in Laas village, Umranala near Chhindwara. Chhindwara is the largest producer of Garlic & Chilli. Dehydration Plant is the main processing units for garlic & vegetables while Extraction Plant is used for Chilli & other Spices. Chilli processing Plant, Steam Sterilization Unit among others.

Tech Park in Chhindwara

The lone corrugated paper box manufacturing plant, Tech Packs is situated at Imlikheda, 7 km from Chhindwara city on Nagpur road. Tech Packs is a part of Horizon Packs, who are into manufacturing from papers to boxes and covers the entire spectrum of corrugated Packaging.

CII at Chhindwara

CII Confederation of Indian Industry is committed in its mission to make India ‘the skills capital of the world’. The skills initiative programme was started in 2008 and in order to realise the goals, a state-of-the-art Skills Training Park was opened in 2011 at Imlikheda, near Chhindwara. Companies such as Larsen & Toubro, Punj Llyod, Toyota Kirloskar Motors and 10 others have come forward to set up training facilities in order to fill the gap of required skilled resource in recent times. This initiative has been instrumental in providing opportunities to rural youth for gainful employment.
